Agriculture in Cameroon is one of the most lucrative jobs that people engage as an occupation. About 75 percent of the population, especially women, are involved in the cultivation of both cash crops and food crops. Women play a pivotal role in cultivating food and generating income. Some of these food crops include potatoes, cocoa, coffee, beans, maize, groundnuts, melon, and cotton.
Women who are into the production of these cash and food crops, face a lot of challenges. One of these challenges is climate change. This greatly affects the cultivation of certain crops. Crops such as Irish potatoes and beans are very seasonal. They are mostly cultivated during the dry season and mostly in the north west and west regions of Cameroon. Climate change hampers the cultivation of these crops.
During such seasons , they are left with no choice but to cultivate this particular crops. This climate conditions compels them to cultivate only this crops. During the rainy season they can then cultivate crops like; green spices , tomatoes, carrots , green beans and others. As a result, it is disadvantageous to them to cultivate certain crops depending on the season and also reduces their income. For example, if a farmer is supposed to cultivate three [3] crops a season, she won’t be able , because she’s taking into consideration what will be fruitful during the harvesting season.
The Berine and bokwe foundation is out to empower and encourage women on the kind of crops to cultivate during the rainy and dry season. They should go for crops that will yield more fruits taking into considerations the seasons. And also, famers should cultivate such crops large quantity, in order to compensate for the crops they did not cultivate in that season.
