The Berine and Bokwe Foundation has made significant moves in improving the lives of young girls and women in Buea through a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) project implemented between 2019 and January 2020.
A key component of the project focused on empowering young girls by equipping them with essential skills for menstrual hygiene management. Over 30 young girls were trained on the production of sanitary pads, providing them with knowledge and the ability to create a sustainable solution for themselves and their communities.
In addition to the training, the foundation distributed sanitary pads to approximately 100 women affected by conflict, demonstrating their commitment to addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.
“Access to sanitary pads is a fundamental right and an essential aspect of women’s health,” said Numa Bere Berine, founder of BEBOF. “Our project empowers young girls by equipping them with the skills to produce these pads, ensuring they can maintain their dignity and health during their menstrual cycles.”
The training sessions were comprehensive, covering the entire process of sanitary pad production, from sourcing materials to the final product. This initiative has also created a ripple effect, as these young girls can now share their knowledge and skills with others in their communities.
This initiative is a testament to the foundation’s dedication to improving the well-being of women and girls in Buea. By addressing critical issues such as menstrual hygiene and access to essential supplies, the Berine and Bokwe Foundation is contributing to the overall health and empowerment of women in the community.
